Tools for freecyclers -- MAPS
Freecycle locally! It’s good for the environment and it saves gas $$.
Here's a free mapping tool (one of my favorites.) which will make your freecyclingactivities easier and maybe even a bit more fun! Use Google Maps to help you figure out where the heck an itemis, how far it is, and how to get there from where you are (and whether it’s even worthmaking the trip).
For example. There's an "AT THE CURB" item, a sofa, offered this morning at the corner ofPixley & Renova. You wonder how far it is from your place. Here's how you use GoogleMaps to get you there.
2. Enter your location in the box like this: Baseline Road and Clyde Avenue, Ottawa, ON .
3. Google maps will return you a page withat your current location on the map.
4. Click on "get directions" and then the "From here" link.
5. In the "End address" box, enter the location of the item you're after, in this case, Pixley& Renova, Ottawa, ON. Google will ask you "Did you mean Pixley Pvt & Renova Pvt,Ottawa, ON". You click on the link for that location.
6. Google Maps will return you awith the distance (10.5 km, about 16 minutes in thiscase) and the driving directions! Wow! That seems worth the trip for a couch. You canprint it or even email it to yourself (or anyone else for that matter)! For USA locations, distances will be shown in miles rather than kilometers.
That's it! Not complicated at all and really helpful. You can even put exact street addresses in Google maps and get help that way. Or you can use postal codes (Canada) orzip codes (USA). Google maps is pretty smart and can usually figure things out.
Get a Google map for one of these Ottawa postal codes: These were created by simply using K1B, Canada (for example) as a search term on To create a short link to point directly to your house on Google maps, you can usethe 'link' feature, and paste it into snipurl to create a memorable url. Many peopledo this for themselves, but if you would like one created such as this one for ourGovernor General:then send an email to andycivil (at)yahoo.ca including the text you'd like, and your street address.
/Team FullCircles-Ottawa================== PS: You might even want to include a link to your approximate location in all youroffer/wanted postings. That makes it even easier for everyone! And, easier is good! Forexample, I'm near Fallowfield and Holitman in Ottawa Canada.
So I enter that in Google Maps; click on 'link to this page' and then copy the URL from theaddress box - .or use a tool like Google URL shortener to shorten the link, in my case.
Once you've created the map link for your location, you can re-useit every time you make a Full Circles posting!
