Restylane FAQs
The answer to long-lasting correction of many wrinkles such as the lines that form between the upper lip and cheek or for the enhancement of areas that thin or flatten done such as the lips is Restylane. If you're considering such a treatment, there are a few things you should know about Restylane. Q: What is Restylane®? A: Restylane is a safe and natural cosmetic filler placed in the second layer (dermis) of skin that restores volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate facial wrinkles, folds, scars, or tissue loss. Q: What is Restylane made of? A: Restylane is cosmetic dermal filler composed of non-animal stabilized hyaluronic acid, one of the natural components of the dermis. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that already exists in the human body and is used to provide volume and fullness to the skin. The hyaluronic acid in Restylane is a crystal-clear gel called NASHA. NASHA is biodegradable and completely biocompatible with human hyaluronic acid. Q: How is Restylane different than other hyaluronic acid-based products? A: Unlike rooster-derived hyaluronic acids and bovine collagen products, Restylane is free from animal proteins. This limits any risk of animal-based disease transmissions or development of allergic reactions to animal proteins.* Q: What should patients do prior to treatment? A: Restylane requires no pre-testing, but you should take a few precautions before being treated. Avoid using aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (such as Motrin, Advil, Aleve, Celebrex, Mobic), herbs (such as St. John's wort, Ginger, Garlic), or high doses of Vitamin E supplements or Omega-3 fatty acids 1 week prior to treatment, because these may increase bruising or bleeding at the injection site. Also, if you have previously suffered from facial cold sores, there is a risk that the needle punctures could contribute to another recurrence. Q: Is Restylane safe? A: Yes. Dermatologists and cosmetic surgeons have used Restylane since 1996 worldwide. Restylane has a highly favorable safety profile. It's composed of non-animal stabilized hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a substance found naturally in the human body. Restylane is fully biocompatible. There is limited risk of animal-based disease transmission or development of allergic reactions to animal proteins. No allergy testing is required before use. The most commonly reported side effects were temporary redness and swelling at the injection site. These effects typically resolve in less than seven days. Precautions • The safety of Restylane for use during pregnancy, in breastfeeding females or in patients under 18 • The safety of Restylane in patients with increased susceptibility to keloid formation and excessive scarring has not been studied. Restylane should not be used in patients with known susceptibility to keloid formation or excessive scarring. • The patient should minimize exposure of the treated area to excessive sun and UV lamp exposure and extreme cold weather until any initial swelling and redness has resolved usually within 1 to 7 days. • If other treatments, such as laser treatments, chemical peeling, or any other procedures are considered before or after treatment with Restylane you should let Dr. Kaufmann know. This also applies if Restylane is administered before the skin has healed completely after such a procedure. Q: Can Restylane be used anywhere on the face? A: Restylane has been used in more than 3 million treatments7 in over 70 countries to correct a variety of wrinkles. It is currently indicated in the U.S. for the treatment of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds. Q: How long does Restylane last? A: Restylane is proven to deliver long-lasting results. Studies have shown that Restylane effects generally last for about six months. The unique NASHA™ technology helps maintain the cosmetic effect until the injected material is nearly gone. Most patients find it lasts longer as much of it persists well after 6 months. Q: How often should I have Restylane treatments done? A: Treatments are typically scheduled at six-month intervals. Please be sure to ask Dr. Kaufmann about recommendations for follow-up treatments. Q: How is Restylane different from Botox®? A: Restylane is a natural, cosmetic filler. In contrast, Botox is a drug that blocks nerve transmission to and relaxes the underlying muscles. Many patients have been very pleased after receiving treatments with both products. Q: How is Restylane different from collagen? A: The collagen (either Cosmaderm or Cosmaplast) that Dr. Kaufmann uses is derived from human skin and is another component of the dermis. It also does not require an allergy test. Both Restylane and Cosmaderm can be administered without pre-testing, so no waiting is required. With either there is limited risk of animal-based disease transmission or allergic reaction. Q: Do the injections hurt? A: Restylane is injected directly into the skin in tiny amounts by an ultrafine needle, resulting in minimal discomfort. The procedure is simple and convenient, and results are practically instantaneous. To optimize your comfort during the short procedure, Dr. Kaufmann may anesthetize the treatment area or prescribe a topical anesthetic to apply before the appointment or both. Dr. Kaufmann may apply an ice bag before and/or after the treatment as well. Q: How much do Restylane treatments cost? A: Restylane is a customized procedure based on your specific needs, so the cost will vary from patient to patient. In general, the cost of Restylane should be comparable to the cost of similar procedures. Because Restylane is long lasting, it may be very economical over the long term. Please ask Dr. Kaufmann to determine the best recommendation for your particular needs. Dr. Kaufmann is dedicated to helping patients attain a healthy and youthful appearance and self-image using many different tools. The wait is over. Now that you have the answers to some important questions, why wait? Restylane is a safe, natural formulation, so there are no delays for allergy testing prior to treatment. The simple procedure can be done during your lunch hour. And the effects are immediate. If you want to enjoy a smoother, more youthful appearance for about six months or more, ask Dr. Kaufmann if Restylane is right for you. Call for an appointment with Dr. Kaufmann in Princeton or Monroe at 609-683-4999 or 609-655-4544.
