*** Victims support groups say the Catholic Church may be preparing to acknowledge its involvement in child sexual abuse in Australia… after Cardinal GEORGE PELL apologised to those who "suffered at the hands" of priests during his Christmas message. His apology comes after the federal government’s move to establish a royal commission into the responses by institutions, including churches, to child sexual abuse cases. Bravehearts founder HETTY JOHNSTON says Cardinal PELL's statement represents a "cultural shift" in the church… as it comes to terms with the role played by some its clergy. *** The Attorney-General NICOLA ROXON says her department did not advise Queensland Labor MP GRAHAM PERRETT, who's asked the Australian Federal Police to investigate senior Liberal figures over the PETER SLIPPER harassment case. Mr PERRETT last Friday sent a 100-point letter to the AFP, referring the agency to a Federal Court judgment earlier which suggested Mr ASHBY may had acted "in combination" with another SLIPPER staffer KAREN DOANE and former HOWARD minister MAL BROUGH In his letter, Mr PERRETT said information in the judgment indicated there may have been a "political conspiracy designed to harm" Mr SLIPPER and the federal Labor government.
Asked today if Mr PERRETT had asked her department or any of her staff for advice, Ms ROXON said: "No". *** A woman charged with the murder of missing man DOUGLAS KALLY has fronted court, as sobbing relatives of the victim watched on. 43-year-old ANGELA WILLIAMS, of St Leonards, appeared at the Melbourne Magistrates court today charged with the murder of 48-year-old Mr KALLY. The offence is alleged to have occurred in July 2008 at Indented Head. Mr KALLY was reported missing by his family in October 2008. *** Police will closely monitor a planned Boxing Day protest outside the Melbourne Cricket Ground… but are not anticipating any major disruptions. The Tamil Refugee Council is organising a 9am demonstration outside the MCG on the first day of the Boxing Day Test. The group wants to boycott the Sri Lankan cricket team and raise awareness of human rights violations. *** And asthma sufferers are being advised to check the label number on their inhalers following a faulty batch recall. Several batches of Ventolin and Asmol inhalers are affected by the recall, due to a fault in the delivery mechanism of a small number of inhalers… which can lead to less than the full dose being delivered for each puff. Manufactures estimate about 25 to 50 thousand inhalers are affected by the recall, out of about 900-thousand puffers distributed each month.
